Amanda Shires is a singer songwriter/poet and activist. Her songwriting is unique and beautiful. She has an interesting perspective on social issues that she brings into her music that illuminates topics that are often overlooked. In the last few years she has not only put out a number of her own records, she also formed an all-female country group called the Highwomen. Not only did they write an incredible album, they brought to the forefront the issue of the lack of diversity in country music.
Her most recent single is a song called “The Problem,” which takes on the issue of reproductive rights in our contemporary climate. The song is thought provoking and insightful, not shying away from a difficult topic but rather taking it head on in a very brave fashion. I have been a fan of Amanda’s music for some time now, and I’m glad I got the opportunity to chat with her about this song.
Proceeds from the song go to help the non-profit “Yellowhammer Fund” which is a reproductive justice organization that seeks to ensure all people have equitable access to information and health services to make their own reproductive decisions. I hope you enjoy our conversation.
